The real history

About the place

The Chart House restaurant at 202 West Bay Street sits on the bluff above the Savannah River, in a warehouse building the restaurant calls the oldest masonry building in Georgia. Food writer Jesse Blanco reports that it was begun before 1790 and completed in 1806, and the Southern Spirit Guide dates it to at least 1818. It was a warehouse for the river trade.

This waterfront is the oldest part of the city. It is also, as local writers point out, where Savannah's trade in enslaved people was most active. Africans were brought ashore here and forced to work, live and die in and around these warehouses.

The Chart House chain opened its Savannah restaurant here in 1979. It serves Lowcountry seafood and has a riverside patio. It is open to the public for dining.

Local legend

The Ghost Story

Told here as local lore, the way guides, books and visitors tell it. These are legends, not established fact.

According to Savannah's Afterlife by paranormal investigator Ryan Dunn, the ghost stories began almost as soon as the restaurant opened in 1979. One evening after closing, a group of employees saw the apparition of a little girl.

Over the years staff and customers have described other figures too: a woman, and a presence they call the 'blue man.' People speak of the feeling of being watched in the old rooms and of poltergeist activity, with objects moving and disturbances no one could explain.

When Jesse Blanco's television team tried to film a story on Savannah's haunted restaurants, the management wouldn't let them shoot inside. Employees who saw the crew outside, though, had plenty to say about what they had heard, and in some cases seen, while working there. Afterlife Tours includes the restaurant on its nightly Restless Souls tour and presents evidence its investigators recorded here.
