The real history
About the place
The Six Pence Pub, at 245 Bull Street, is a British-style pub in the Historic District, known for the red telephone box by its front door. It was founded as 'Wally's Sixpence' by Wally and Doris, a couple who came from London and wanted a relaxed pub that anyone, and especially expatriates, could enjoy. For roughly forty years it had no kitchen. Doris made lunch for the regulars at her house nearby and served it until it ran out.
In 1999 the pub was sold to new owners, who say they were regulars 'with too much time on their hands.' They added a kitchen with a full English and American comfort-food menu. The interior has since been updated, and the pub bills itself as the most authentic English pub in Georgia. Today it is a working pub and restaurant and a regular stop on Ghost City Tours' Savannah Haunted Pub Crawl.
Local legend
The Ghost Story
Told here as local lore, the way guides, books and visitors tell it. These are legends, not established fact.
At the Six Pence, according to the stories, the spirits mostly bother the staff. Kitchen workers describe pots and pans flying off the counters, as if swept away by an invisible arm. A former manager says he watched an office chair turn in a slow circle and then slide across the floor by itself. Employees also complain of sudden temperature drops, a thermostat that changes on its own, and light bulbs that burst in their sockets.
Ghost City Tours admits that no one knows of a specific ghost story behind the pub. The company's founder, Tim Nealon, has said that when someone pours their life into a place, their spirit sometimes stays. That leads to a gentle theory told on the pub crawl: perhaps Wally or Doris never really left and are still looking after the place they built. Or perhaps it's the regulars of decades past, back for one more pint.
